ABOUT ME:
With nearly five years of experience as a journalist, I have built a strong foundation in storytelling, reporting, and crafting engaging content.
I am currently working as a senior reporter at the Star Weekly — a weekly publication focused on Melbourne’s western suburbs and councils.
For each edition, I source, research, and write nearly 20 stories, including long-form features and fleshed-out front page leads.
In this role I have covered crime, council affairs, climate issues, health, state and local politics, as well as hyperlocal stories.
Before joining the Star Weekly, I worked at The Maryborough District Advertiser — a semi-weekly regional masthead — as a journalist for more than two years.
I initially joined the newspaper as a junior reporter and gradually advanced to the position of senior journalist. I also stepped into the role of acting editor on several occasions.
My move to Maryborough was filmed as part of SBS's documentary Meet The Neighbours, hosted by Myf Warhurst. I starred in the show alongside seven other diverse households. After the series aired, I shared my experiences and gave interviews to several media outlets, including ABC, SBS, and Channel 10.
Some of my prior undertakings include:
-
Interning at the ABC Melbourne newsroom
-
Working as the Executive Producer for SYN Media's flagship news and current affairs program, Panorama
-
Developing The University of Melbourne’s award-winning podcast, Uncurated, as the Series Producer
-
Writing stories and covering Youth Parliament as a member of the YMCA Youth Press Gallery
-
Working as the reporter/sub-editor for Construction World Magazine
-
Penning feature stories as the editorial intern for Business Traveller
As a reporter, I tailor my approach to each story — utilising visuals, audio grabs, multimedia elements, or traditional storytelling mediums as appropriate.
I hold a Master's degree in Journalism, with distinction, from The University of Melbourne.
[Prealene's] come from the city life and moved to the country, taken a job as a young journo, and that takes a lot of guts. She’s out on the ground straight away and she embraced it wholeheartedly. I loved watching her thrive."

Won the ‘Best Opinion/Editorial’ Award at the Victorian Country Press Association Awards 2024, for my piece ‘Kickstarting a crucial conversation', which was judged by The Age editor Patrick Elligett.
